| This rags to riches drama is based on the autobiography of Li Cunxin who, at the age of 11, was plucked from a poor Chinese village by Madame Mao's cultural delegates and taken to Beijing to study ballet. In 1979, during an exchange to Texas, he fell in love with an American woman and two years later managed to defect. He went on to perform as a principal dancer with both Houston Ballet and the Australian Ballet. The film's director, Bruce Beresford, was adamant that the role of Li could only be played by a great dancer. "You can't cheat this - cutting to someone else's legs dancing" and a world-wide search culminated in the casting of Chi Cao (pictured), a Principal dancer with Birmingham Royal Ballet in the UK. The bar and bookshop are open from 10.00am in summer and 11.00am in winter until 10.30 every night.
