This rags to riches drama is based on the autobiography of Li Cunxin who, at the age of 11, was plucked from a poor Chinese village by Madame Mao's cultural delegates and taken to Beijing to study ballet. In 1979, during an exchange to Texas, he fell in love with an American woman and two years later managed to defect. He went on to perform as a principal dancer with both Houston Ballet and the Australian Ballet. The film's director, Bruce Beresford, was adamant that the role of Li could only be played by a great dancer. "You can't cheat this - cutting to someone else's legs dancing" and a world-wide search culminated in the casting of Chi Cao (pictured), a Principal dancer with Birmingham Royal Ballet in the UK. Dorothy Browns is delighted to have had an **exclusive interview** with Chi which can be read by clicking the following link.
PLUS - everyone coming to see Mao's Last Dancer at Dorothy Browns can enter their name into a prize draw to receive a signed poster of Chi Cao. Wow !! And not only that, Chi has agreed to answer some more questions that our patrons might like to put to the dancer-turned-actor. Please send them to dorothy@dorothybrowns.com and a selection will be posted on this site at a later date... |
