Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) is a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching ten million frequent flyer miles and just after he's met the frequent-traveller woman of his dreams. His job is to fire people from theirs. He flies around the country, living out of a suitcase, and helps companies downsize. And he loves it. The anguish, hostility and despair of his "clients" has left him lacking in compassion and he revels in his lack of personal ties. When his boss hires an arrogant young woman, she threatens the existence Ryan knows by developing a method of video conferencing so that people can be fired without anyone having to leave the office. Ryan takes her on one of his cross-country firing expeditions hoping to prove to her that her method won't work, but as she starts to realise the disheartening realities of her profession, he begins to see the downfalls of his way of life. |
